We will try to give you a quick recap of what has been going on in Espana before we enter into warp speed!
Okay-first lets talk about getting out of brutally hot Athens, Greece! We sadly said goodbye to the traveling aggies on the early morning of June 18th. We spent the rest of the day chilling out, finding our awesome hostel where we got upgraded to the penthouse suite! (We had two rooms and a huge balcony on the 6th floor all to ourselves.) We hung out with our tour director Herbie. He was still willing to hang out with us even though he was "off duty!" We said goodbye to the second tour group and hung out at their rooftop bar until 12:30am and went to bed. Little did we know we were missing our 2.55 am flight!
So, June 19th comes. We wake up happy as clams, enjoy our morning in Athens and dream of going to Barcelona that afternoon! Whitney buys some cool leather shoes from this famous shoemaker at a store called The Poet. We make a rush to the Ancient Agora and to the market. Then take an expensive 30+ minute taxi ride to the airport. We excitedly go to check in and find out that our "02:55 flight" was military time for 2:55 am! Who flies at that time? We thought it was 2:55 in the afternoon! So we missed our flight and didn't even know it! And that was the only flight of the day to Barcelona the next one was 2:55 am the next day!!
Decision Time: Spend 13 hours in the airport or go back to baking hot -far away -full of aggie memories Athens for the rest of the day??
Go back to baking hot-far away- full of aggie memories Athens on a 3.20 euro bus!
(We hope you don't take this that we were ungrateful for being in Athens, Greece. We really do consider ourselves incredibly blessed to be doing everything that we are doing. We were just excited to begin our new adventure in Spain and not be reminded of all our friends who just left.)
However, we were able to meet up with our fellow Traveling Aggie friend, Regan. We hung out on the rooftop of our hostel with a great view of Acropolis and listened to Regan's crazy second trip back to Poros! It was grand.
We got on a night bus at 12:30 to the airport. We got there right when they announced our flight had been delayed to 4:20 am. So, we got acquainted with the airport floor and took a nap. We also met a fellow traveler that had been in the airport for 18 hours! nuts.
We made it to Barcelona around 7am! We then"schlepped" our body bag luggage about a mile through the airport. Got on a ten minute metro ride. Walked two blocks, crossed through a gas station, and turned left, and arrived at our hostel that had a door that looked like a metal storage unit.
We were welcomed in by a sweet Spanish woman who fed us breakfast and welcomed us to Barcelona!
We have much more to tell but we are running off to the Prado museum in Madrid right now. Until next time!
